Postdoc Physicist/ Engineer (m/f/d) for the development of the ITER bolometer diagnostic
Stellenangebot vom 12.11.2024
The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which – like the sun – generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.
The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the department ITER Technology & Diagnostics (ITED) a position for a Postdoc Physicist/ Engineer for the development of the ITER bolometer diagnostic (m/f/d). As a member of the ITER Diagnostics group at IPP Garching, the jobholder will contribute to the development and understanding of bolometer sensors for ITER. He/she will perform experiments in the lab in combination with analytical and/or finite-element simulations to develop a consolidated understanding of the sensor and its signal processing chain on a ms time scale. The results can be applied to study fast events on ASDEX Upgrade.
Your tasks
- Plan, perform and evaluate dedicated measurements in the lab to characterize the response signal of bolometer sensor prototypes developed for ITER for light pulses of 1 – 50 ms duration
- Plan, perform and evaluate dedicated simulations of the bolometer sensor to understand the bolometer signals of fast events based on sensor geometry, material properties and the signal processing chain
- Collaborate with international partners on the development of bolometer sensors for fusion diagnostics
Your profile
- PhD in Physics, Electric Engineering or equivalent fields
- Good knowledge concerning finite-element simulations (e.g. COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS)
- Hands-on knowledge of data acquisition systems, signal processing, data evaluation and visualization
- Experience in data acquisition using FPGAs and LabView software
- Experience in bolometer diagnostics for fusion research is an advantage
- Ability to fluently present complex scientific and technical matters in English
- Good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills; high competence in team working
We offer
- An interesting job at one of the largest research institutes for fusion research
- Flexible working hours
- Training and further education opportunities
- Family service of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
- Further social benefits (e.g. company pension scheme, capital-forming benefits, discounted public transport tickets)
The position is limited to 3 years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
The IPP seeks to increase the proportion of employed women in those areas where they are underrepresented and explicitly encourages women to apply for this position. The IPP is committed to employing more disabled individuals and especially encourages them to apply.
